The families of four victims from the Air India Flight 171 crash have filed a lawsuit in the United States. The legal action has been taken against aircraft manufacturer Boeing and aerospace supplier Honeywell.
Negligence Alleged in Aircraft Design
The families allege that there was negligence in the design and safety of the fuel control switches on the aircraft. Concerns have been raised about how these switches could be accidentally moved during flight.
Crash After Take-Off from Ahmedabad
The tragic crash took place on 13 June 2025, shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad. The incident resulted in the death of 260 people, including passengers, crew members, and civilians on the ground.
Faulty Fuel Switches Cited
As per the lawsuit filed in Texas, the aircraft’s fuel switches were found to have shifted from the “run” position to “cut-off.” This led to a complete shutdown of fuel supply to the engines right after departure.
Companies Allegedly Ignored Prior Warnings
The plaintiffs claim Boeing and Honeywell were aware of this risk for years. They cited a 2018 FAA advisory that recommended inspections of the fuel switch locking mechanism but did not make them mandatory.
Failure to Act on Safety Concerns
The lawsuit further alleges that neither Boeing nor Honeywell took corrective action. They reportedly did not provide replacement parts or issue firm safety guidelines to prevent similar accidents.
Boeing Refers to Indian Probe
Boeing declined to comment on the ongoing legal matter. However, the company pointed to the preliminary report from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.
