Air India is set to increase airfares by introducing a revised fuel surcharge. This move follows a similar step taken by IndiGo.
The decision comes amid rising aviation turbine fuel prices. These increases are linked to tensions in West Asia involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
The new surcharge will take effect from April 8 for domestic routes. For key international routes, it will begin from April 10.
For domestic travel, Air India has shifted to a distance-based surcharge system. Passengers flying up to 500 km will pay an extra ₹299 per sector. For distances beyond 2,000 km, the charge can go up to ₹899.
On international routes, the impact is higher. Flights to Europe will include a surcharge of $205 per sector. Travel to North America and Australia will attract charges of $280.
Routes to West Asia and Southeast Asia will see lower surcharges. Passengers will pay $50 and $100 respectively depending on the destination.
This update comes after IndiGo introduced similar revisions. The airline added surcharges of up to ₹950 on domestic routes and ₹10,000 on long-haul international flights.
Airlines say rising fuel costs are the main reason behind these changes. However, the increase is expected to affect passenger affordability, especially during ongoing global uncertainties.
