The case centred on passenger Jesus Plasencia, who showed stroke symptoms while boarding a Miami to Madrid flight in November 2021. He lost his ability to speak and struggled to use his phone at the gate. His wife, Ana, alerted the crew immediately.

Pilot Cleared Flight Despite Warnings

According to court records, the pilot dismissed Ana’s concerns and allowed takeoff. American Airlines’ protocols require crew members to seek medical help from onboard professionals, but the complaint claimed these steps were ignored.

Severe Stroke During Flight

Midway over the Atlantic, Plasencia suffered a serious stroke. He was admitted to a hospital in Spain for more than three weeks before being flown back to the U.S. by air ambulance.

Lasting Health Impact

The stroke left Plasencia permanently unable to speak or write. He now depends on his wife for daily care.

Jury Awards Compensation

A California District Court jury awarded $13.28 million in damages, later adjusted to $11.06 million. The case highlights the importance of airlines following medical procedures and prioritising passenger safety over operational convenience.
