Flight Diverted to Washington Dulles
Flight 357, an Airbus A321 travelling from Philadelphia (PHL) to Phoenix (PHX), diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The flight landed safely at around 11:50 a.m. with 160 passengers and six crew members.
Smoke From Passenger Device
The airline confirmed that the smoke came from a passenger’s personal electronic device. The cabin crew acted quickly, securing the device and containing the issue. Their swift action prevented further complications during the flight.
Crew Response Praised
Trained in handling lithium-ion battery incidents, the crew managed the situation with professionalism. All passengers and crew deplaned safely, and no injuries were reported. American Airlines later arranged onward travel to Phoenix for affected passengers.
Lithium Battery Concerns in Aviation
Lithium battery-related issues are becoming more common in aviation. Airlines now use safety bags and detailed protocols to reduce risks from overheating devices. This preparedness helps ensure safer skies for all travellers.
FAA Review and Safety Oversight
The FAA announced it will review the incident as part of standard safety checks. While the situation caused no serious harm, it highlights the continuing challenges posed by passenger devices and the importance of effective emergency responses.
