BA Flight Panic: Smoke in Cabin, Mayday Announced

A British Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating as Flight BA16 from Sydney to Singapore was forced to make an emergency landing at Sydney Airport on September 3, 2025. The crew issued a mayday call after reporting a technical issue mid-flight.

The aircraft took off from Sydney just after 3 p.m. with hundreds of passengers on board. About an hour into the journey, while flying over the Central Tablelands near Orange, the crew declared an emergency and turned back toward Sydney.

Passengers Recall Panic

Travellers described the situation as frightening. Some reported cabin lights and entertainment systems switching off suddenly. Others said they noticed a strong smell of fuel in the cockpit and faint odours in parts of the cabin. Reports of possible smoke prompted swift action from the crew.

Safe Landing at Sydney

The Dreamliner landed safely around 4 p.m., where fire and emergency response teams were waiting on the runway. Sydney Airport confirmed that all passengers disembarked safely and operations continued without disruption. British Airways said the diversion was a precautionary measure.

Ongoing Investigation

After the safe landing, the airline rebooked travellers on alternative flights to reduce inconvenience. The exact cause of the technical issue has not been disclosed. Investigations are underway while passengers praised the professionalism of the crew in ensuring safety.
