No Coffee for Crew: Airline’s Rules Going Too Far?

British Airways has introduced new uniform and conduct rules that are facing criticism from employees and passengers. One of the most controversial policies bans crew members from drinking coffee or other beverages in public while in uniform.

Restrictions on Beverages and Staff Areas

The airline allows water to be consumed discreetly, but coffee or other drinks must be confined to staff areas such as lounges or cafeterias. British Airways says the rules aim to preserve a professional image and protect the airline’s reputation.

Appearance Guidelines Tightened

The updated code also specifies appearance standards, including hairstyles, nail polish shades, lipstick colours, and eyeglass types. Crew members are even barred from commuting to work on planes while wearing uniforms, unlike employees of other airlines.

Employee Pushback

Flight attendants and pilots argue that coffee is essential during long schedules, early departures, or after long-haul flights. Many say the public ban is unnecessarily strict, as most passengers do not see a problem with crew drinking coffee at terminals.

Comparison with Other Airlines

While appearance standards exist across airlines, experts describe British Airways’ new restrictions as excessive. This follows earlier rules limiting social media use during layovers and banning selfies from hotel rooms, showing a strong emphasis on image over convenience.

Balancing Professionalism and Practicality

British Airways maintains that the new guidelines enhance professionalism. However, critics argue that the rules prioritise image over the practical needs of employees, especially during demanding schedules, creating tension within the aviation community.
