Festive Loot? Airlines Accused of Exploiting Flyers

A Reddit post is going viral which puts forward a big problem for Bangali Flyers. Every year, Kolkata-based flyers face a frustrating and familiar reality. As the festive season rolls in, so do the skyrocketing airfares.

What should be routine domestic travel becomes financially draining, with one-way tickets to nearby cities like Siliguri or Guwahati crossing ₹10,000 during Durga Puja or Christmas.

Routes like Kolkata to Goa see fares tripling in October, while flights from Mumbai or Bangalore to Goa during Diwali or New Year tend to stay relatively affordable. Flyers from the eastern metro are left asking: why does Kolkata bear the brunt of dynamic pricing?

The answer might lie in a combination of market factors and systemic neglect. Kolkata lacks viable alternative airports, regional airline hubs, or sufficient rail connectivity during peak times. With no government intervention or DGCA oversight on festive pricing, airlines appear free to exploit demand unchecked.

However, a Reddit comment offers a thoughtful counterpoint. Compared to other metros, Bengalis travel more frequently during festivals and for leisure, not just religious purposes.

With fewer people owning personal vehicles and limited nearby destinations for road trips, more residents are funneled into CCU for flights. This spikes demand across the board, especially as the airport operates with a single runway and constrained capacity.

Even so, the current situation feels excessive. Other metros see increased demand too, but they often get added flight frequency or capped fares. Kolkata rarely receives such relief. Airlines and authorities must recognize this pattern and respond accordingly.

Whether through special flights, fare regulation, or regional airport development, a more equitable travel system is long overdue. Until then, passengers from the East will continue paying the highest price for wanting to celebrate.
