Relief for Indian Flyers: 60% Airline Seats Now Free

India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has introduced a new directive requiring airlines to allocate at least 60 percent of seats on every flight free of charge. The move aims to improve fairness and reduce additional costs for passengers.

Issued on March 18, 2026, the directive is part of a broader effort to enhance passenger convenience and transparency. It also seeks to bring more consistency across airline operations in the country.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has instructed airlines to seat passengers booked under the same PNR together. Wherever possible, they should be given adjacent seats to improve travel comfort.

Airlines have also been asked to introduce clear policies for carrying pets, sports equipment, and musical instruments. This step is expected to reduce confusion caused by varying rules and charges.

The Ministry has stressed strict compliance with passenger rights. This is especially important in cases of delays, cancellations, and denied boarding, where passengers often face inconvenience.

Airlines must clearly display passenger rights on their websites, mobile apps, and airport counters. They are also required to communicate these rights in regional languages to improve accessibility.

With Indian airports handling over five lakh passengers daily, the government has reiterated its focus on passenger convenience. Ensuring a smooth and fair travel experience remains a key priority.

While the move appears passenger friendly and timely, its effectiveness will depend on implementation. Airlines must follow the rules without introducing hidden charges that could offset the intended benefits.
