Passengers travelling between India and Europe are raising concerns over soaring airline charges. Despite base fares starting as low as ₹7,000 on budget carriers, the final ticket price is almost doubled by airport taxes and hidden fees.
Taxes Take Up Half the Fare
For example, on a ₹10,500 Mumbai-Vienna ticket, nearly ₹3,200 goes toward airport charges and levies. These include aviation security fees, bus transfers, and service costs that far outweigh the actual benefits passengers receive.
Services vs. Passenger Experience
Travellers point out that many of these charges are linked to routine measures like security checks and boarding transfers. Yet the quality of these services doesn’t reflect the rising costs, raising doubts about their necessity and efficiency.
Terminals and User Development Fees
Airports such as Delhi T3, Bengaluru T1, and Hyderabad boast clean and well-designed facilities. However, “gold-plated” features like ornamental flowerbeds, designer taps, and premium lounges push up user development fees without improving the core passenger experience.
A Costly Focus on Aesthetics
Instead of prioritising efficiency, airports are investing in cosmetic upgrades that add little value for travellers. Passengers argue that long-term projects and luxury infrastructure come at their expense, making air travel more expensive without real improvements.
