Indigo Flight Loots Passengers? Extra Hidden Fees

A traveller recently shared a surprising breakdown of a Mumbai–Vienna flight fare. The ticket cost ₹10,500, but IndiGo retained only ₹7,300. The remaining ₹3,200, nearly one-third of the fare, went towards airport taxes and other fees.

Security Fees Highlighted

The passenger noted that the aviation security fee of ₹1,245 and the flight security tax of ₹205 alone total ₹1,450. With around 2.5 crore passengers passing through Mumbai Airport annually, this amounts to roughly ₹3,600 crore from security-related charges alone.

Questioning the Costs

The passenger questioned whether the actual cost of providing security justifies such high fees. It seems unlikely that security expenses reach ₹1,500 per person, raising concerns about the fairness of these charges.

Airlines and Market Strategy

They speculated that airlines like IndiGo might operate certain international routes at a loss to attract passengers and gain market share. This strategy, while competitive, may also contribute to higher hidden costs for travellers.

Broader Industry Concern

The observation points to a larger issue in India’s aviation sector. Although passenger numbers continue to grow, rising taxes and hidden fees risk making air travel less affordable for the average traveller.
