Amid Major Flight Chaos, IndiGo Beats Air India

IndiGo has, for the first time, overtaken the Air India Group in quarterly international passenger traffic. The shift marks a notable change in India’s aviation landscape during the July to September 2025 quarter.

Data for the quarter shows IndiGo carried slightly more international passengers than the combined operations of Air India and Air India Express. This change was driven by disruptions at one carrier and steady expansion at the other.

Crash Triggers Capacity Cuts At Air India

The immediate trigger was the June 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash involving Air India flight AI 171. Following the incident, Air India reduced long haul international capacity by around 15 percent. Safety reviews and operational adjustments followed.

Reduced Seats Slow Passenger Growth

The capacity reduction directly impacted seat availability in the following quarter. This slowdown affected international passenger growth across the Air India Group. The shift was operational rather than structural.

IndiGo Maintains Its International Schedule

IndiGo continued operating its international network without cuts during the same period. Its focus remains on short and medium haul routes. These include destinations across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and nearby regions.

Route Strategy Helps IndiGo Gain Share

Short and medium haul routes recover faster from disruptions. This allowed IndiGo to absorb spillover demand from passengers affected by Air India’s reduced capacity. High aircraft utilisation also supported stable volumes.

Passenger Numbers Show Narrow Gap

IndiGo carried a little over 41.3 lakh international passengers in the July to September quarter. The Air India Group carried roughly 41 lakh during the same period. The difference highlights how close the competition has become.

Shift Driven By Short Term Factors

Earlier in the year, Air India held a clear lead in international traffic. The latest shift reflects short term operational changes rather than a long term decline. Fleet availability played a key role.

Air India Still Holds Network Advantage

Despite losing the quarterly lead, Air India continues to operate a broader international network. The group also remains strong in international cargo operations. The episode underlines how resilience can reshape market leadership quickly.
