Korean Air’s Premium Upgrade Snubs Economy Flyers

Korean Air’s new Premium Class on its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft has drawn criticism for reducing comfort in standard economy. While marketed as a luxury upgrade, the move appears to come at the direct cost of economy travellers.

Comfort Cut in Economy for Premium Space

The airline is reconfiguring its aircraft to add Premium Class seating, but this change forces standard economy into a tighter 3-4-3 layout replacing the earlier 3-3-3 design. This reduces seat width from 18.1 inches to 17.1 inches.

Though the change may seem minor, on long-haul international flights, that one inch can mean hours of discomfort, especially for taller or broader passengers.

Shrinking Seats as a Trade-Off

With average passenger size increasing worldwide, shrinking seat dimensions shows little concern for passenger well-being. Instead of improving comfort for all, the airline is narrowing economy space to sell a more expensive cabin with only modest improvements.

Korean Air claims its new Premium Class offers 1.5 times more space than regular economy. However, independent assessments suggest the difference is closer to 1.35 times raising concerns about exaggerated marketing.

Who Really Pays for the Upgrade?

Premium Class might benefit some, but the majority families, students, and budget travellers will feel the impact. For many, economy is not a downgrade but the only option. Reducing space in that section shifts the burden onto those least likely to afford better seats.

Innovation or Disguised Downgrade?

Consumer advocates argue that this move isn’t a real improvement. Instead of enhancing the flying experience overall, Korean Air is simply repackaging space and charging more for it.

Narrower seats and more cramped cabins are turning economy travel into a physical strain. Passengers expect innovation to improve flying not make it harder for those already squeezed by high ticket costs.
