Huge IndiGo Partnership to Boost Malaysia Trips

Malaysia Airlines is set to expand its reach in India with more flights and a deeper partnership with IndiGo. The carrier currently operates 77 weekly flights to India, which will increase to 80 in the winter schedule, adding extra services to Ahmedabad and Thiruvananthapuram.

India’s Growing Importance for Malaysia Airlines
India plays a key role in the airline’s growth, contributing 11% to its total revenue and 20% of its passenger traffic. In the first half of 2025 alone, Malaysia Airlines carried 1.3 million passengers between India and Malaysia. Of these, 30% travelled directly between the two countries, while 70% used Kuala Lumpur as a transit hub for destinations across Southeast Asia, China, Australia, and New Zealand.

Focus on Service and Onboard Experience
To attract more passengers, the airline is working on better punctuality, improved onboard comfort, and quarterly menu upgrades in partnership with Oberoi Flight Kitchen. Over the last seven years, its international revenue share has doubled and now stands at 90% of total earnings.

Expanding Codeshare Opportunities with IndiGo
Reports suggest the airline is in talks with IndiGo to expand their existing codeshare arrangement to include destinations in Southeast Asia and Australia. This move could significantly increase travel options for passengers from India.

Free Domestic Flights for International Passengers
In another initiative, Malaysia Airlines has launched its “Bonus Side Trip” programme, offering free domestic flights within Malaysia for international passengers in transit. Whether these strategies will win over a larger share of Indian travellers will become clear in the coming months.
