A passenger travelling on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Miami to London was arrested at Miami International Airport this week. Authorities found a large quantity of marijuana in her checked luggage during outbound screening, stopping the journey before departure.
Smell Triggers Inspection
CBP officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from two hard sided suitcases. The bags were tagged to 22 year old Begum Mulazimoglu of London. This immediately led officers to carry out a detailed physical inspection.
Large Marijuana Haul Found
After opening the suitcases, officers found several vacuum sealed packages wrapped in black nylon. Tests confirmed the green leafy substance was marijuana. Investigators recovered 60 bundles weighing about 65.43 pounds, well beyond personal use limits under Florida law.
Tracking Devices Raise Suspicion
Authorities also discovered tracking devices hidden inside the bundles. Apple AirTags were placed in each suitcase. This suggested the luggage was being monitored during transit, raising further concerns about organised drug trafficking.
Arrest And Formal Charges
Officers also documented mixed currency found in Mulazimoglu’s possession. She was taken into custody at the airport and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She was formally booked on marijuana trafficking charges valued above thirty thousand dollars.
Court Sets Bond Amount
During a bond hearing held the next day, prosecutors requested a fifteen thousand dollar bond. The judge set bond at ten thousand dollars, noting that the accused had no prior criminal history on record.
Airport Security Under Focus
Incidents like this highlight strict security checks at major international airports such as Miami. Customs and Border Protection continues to prioritise drug enforcement through detailed baggage inspections and strong coordination across agencies.
