A long-time Qatar Airways passenger recently faced a frustrating travel experience. Their planned itinerary was Phnom Penh (PNH) to Doha, Madrid, and Bogotá. They arrived at the airport three hours before departure, only to be told they needed a transit visa for Madrid.
Conflicting Transit Visa Information
The passenger was surprised as they had previously travelled the same route with Qatar Airways without needing any transit visa. Before rebooking, they checked the official Spanish government website, which confirmed that Turkish ordinary passport holders do not require a transit visa for Madrid.
Second Denial and Failed Rebooking Attempts
Despite this, Qatar Airways denied boarding on the second attempt. The passenger tried to switch to a Phnom Penh (PNH) to São Paulo (GRU) route, calling customer service four times. Each 15-minute call was disconnected without any callback, even though they requested one.
Missed Flight and Lost Avios Upgrade
As a result, they missed their flight. They had also upgraded the Phnom Penh to Doha segment using Avios points, which were lost. Qatar Airways stated that any ticket change within the departure time results in the forfeiture of the Avios upgrade.
Loyalty Impacted by Poor Service
Having been a Qatar Airways member for over ten years, the passenger is now reconsidering their loyalty. The inconsistent policies and poor customer service during the incident have caused serious disappointment.
