Qatar Airways Pays Off 42 Hours of Hell with $200

Qatar Airways Pays Off

A Reddit user has shared a frustrating account of how a delayed Qatar Airways flight turned their journey into a 42-hour ordeal, followed by what they describe as poor customer service and zero accountability.

The problem began with Flight QR579 from Delhi to Doha on 22 November 2024. A technical fault delayed the flight by over 5 hours, causing the passengers to miss their connecting flight to Cape Town. Instead of rebooking them promptly, the airline put them on an alternative flight the next day. They eventually landed in Cape Town at 8 PM on 23 November, more than 26 hours late.

The user said the delay ruined travel plans and posed a safety risk due to the late-night arrival. Qatar Airways offered only $200 vouchers per passenger, which are non-refundable and can only be used for future bookings. Despite repeated emails and escalation to senior customer care, the airline refused to offer further compensation.

Adding to the frustration, a formal complaint to Qatar’s aviation regulator (QCAA) was dismissed. QCAA stated that since Doha was only a transit point, they could not act. This contradicts the Montreal Convention, which allows passengers to seek compensation for delays regardless of where the incident occurs.

The passenger has considered taking the matter to India’s DGCA or consumer court, but wonders if it is worth the time and energy.

Many users responded with similar stories, pointing to a pattern of minimal accountability when things go wrong in international transit. As the Montreal Convention remains unenforced in such cases, the burden rests heavily on the affected passengers.
