A frequent flyer from Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) has criticised Southwest Airlines for charging what he called “obscene” fares. The traveller compared Southwest with rival carriers and raised concerns over non-competitive pricing.
Loyal Customer Chooses Competitor
This flyer usually takes 4 to 6 round trips every year and has been a loyal Southwest customer for nearly a decade. But this holiday season, he switched to a rival airline after noticing huge fare disparities.
United Airlines Offers Cheaper Option
The traveller booked five seats on United Airlines for $132 each in standard economy. These tickets included assigned seats. On the same nonstop route, Southwest quoted $254 under the Choice fare, plus $42 for EarlyBird seat priority.
Big Savings by Switching Airlines
The total on Southwest came to $296 per ticket. By flying with United, the group saved $820 overall. For a regular passenger, this marked a major difference in both pricing and value, despite Southwest’s past loyalty benefits.
American Airlines Also Cheaper
The traveller reported a similar experience with American Airlines. Two tickets cost $128 each with assigned seating. In comparison, Southwest charged $296, plus $40 EarlyBird, pushing the cost to $336 per seat.
Questions Over Airline Pricing
Such incidents highlight rising concerns about unregulated airline fares. Customers who once stayed loyal to Southwest now feel forced to explore cheaper competitors. The issue also raises questions for aviation bodies monitoring airline pricing policies.
