The Supreme Court of India has strongly criticised the country’s aviation authorities over how they handled the aftermath of the Air India crash in June. The accident killed 261 people and is considered one of the worst disasters in India’s aviation history.
Crash Details and Casualties
The Dreamliner flight, travelling from Ahmedabad to Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off. Only one person survived. Among the victims were 242 passengers and 19 people on the ground, leaving families devastated.
Court on Media Leaks
The court slammed the aviation authority’s media leaks as irresponsible. Many of these leaks suggested pilot error as the cause. It noted that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s preliminary report was presented in a selective and piecemeal way.
Questions on Investigation
According to the report, fuel supply was cut seconds after take-off. A cockpit voice recording also revealed confusion in the cockpit. The Safety Matters Foundation has demanded an independent probe, challenging the current findings.
Judge’s Remarks on Pilots
During the hearing, the judge said implying that pilots deliberately shut off fuel supply was very unfortunate and irresponsible. The comments raised serious questions about the fairness of the investigation.
DGCA’s Defence and Audit Findings
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation defended India’s aviation safety record. However, its own audit revealed 51 safety violations at Air India in the previous year. This has further fuelled concerns about regulatory oversight.
Families Seek Justice Abroad
Victims’ families have filed lawsuits in the United States against Boeing and Honeywell, accusing them of negligence. These cases are expected to draw global attention to safety accountability in aviation.
Urgent Need for Transparency
The Supreme Court’s remarks underline the need for transparency in aviation investigations. Without an independent probe, restoring public trust in India’s aviation sector will remain a serious challenge.
