Sued for Racial Bias: Pilot Slams United Airlines

Former United Airlines pilot John Paul Castillo III has filed a federal lawsuit against the airline, accusing it of racial discrimination, disability discrimination, retaliation, and defamation. He claims he was wrongfully terminated in November 2023 following false assumptions about alcoholism.

Hispanic Pilot Claims Discrimination

Castillo, a Hispanic pilot and U.S. Air Force veteran, was arrested for DUI in July 2023 but later cleared when the charges were dismissed. Despite this, United Airlines allegedly treated him as an alcoholic and took disciplinary action without sufficient evidence.

Lawsuit Filed in Texas Federal Court

According to the complaint filed on October 13, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Castillo had joined United in January 2023 and began flying in March. He notified both United and the FAA about his arrest, as per aviation regulations.

Airline Allegedly Ignored Independent Evaluation

Even though an independent medical evaluation confirmed he did not suffer from alcohol-use disorder, United reportedly pressured him to enroll in its Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) program, meant for pilots diagnosed with addiction. When he refused, the airline terminated him, citing a temporary loss of his FAA medical certification.

Accusations of Racial Bias and Unfair Treatment

Castillo’s lawsuit argues that United’s actions reflected racial bias and unfair stereotyping. He claims other pilots with proven alcohol issues were treated leniently or given medical leave, while he was dismissed without valid cause or due process.
