India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has fined IndiGo ₹20 lakh for lapses in pilot training procedures. The penalty, issued on 26 September 2025, questions the airline’s adherence to simulator training standards at Category C airports.
DGCA Flags Simulator Violations
The DGCA stated that IndiGo failed to use certified simulators for training pilots operating at Category C airports. These airports are known for their complex terrains and demanding approach conditions, requiring specialised simulator training for safe operations.
Safety and Compliance Concerns
As per DGCA regulations, airlines must ensure pilots are trained on approved devices designed for challenging flight environments. IndiGo’s use of uncertified simulators raised concerns about pilot preparedness and overall safety during real-world flight operations.
IndiGo Responds to the Order
In a regulatory filing, IndiGo confirmed receiving the DGCA’s penalty order. The airline attributed the delay in disclosing the fine to an internal communication lapse and clarified that the penalty would not affect its finances or daily flight operations.
Airline Plans to Appeal the Decision
IndiGo has announced its intention to appeal the DGCA’s decision. The airline indicated disagreement with parts of the findings and interpretations regarding simulator certification and training compliance.
Increased Scrutiny on Pilot Training
While the fine may not impact IndiGo’s financial standing, the case highlights growing regulatory oversight in India’s aviation sector. The DGCA’s action underscores its intent to enforce stricter simulator and pilot proficiency standards, especially as Indian airlines expand global operations.
