A United Airlines passenger has spoken out after experiencing what they describe as “cruel and inexcusable” treatment while returning to Australia from California with their terminally ill father.
The family had just completed a critical medical procedure and were in a highly fragile emotional and physical state.
To support their parents during the long-haul flight, the passenger’s elderly parents had purchased a business class upgrade. They were issued a boarding pass for seat 9A, boarded the aircraft, and were seated.
But shortly after, they were asked to disembark due to a so-called “payment issue.” They complied without protest, expecting a swift resolution.
Instead, the passenger was left waiting outside the aircraft for over ten minutes. Meanwhile, their elderly parents, one of them severely ill with pancreatic cancer, were also forced to wait off the plane, confused and distressed.
When the gate supervisor finally appeared, they offered no explanation and instructed the passenger to return to their original premium economy seat. Any questions were met with hostility.
The parents, concerned and trying to advocate for their child, were told they could be removed from the flight if they continued speaking up.
According to the passenger, their father began physically shaking and their mother was so upset she refused to eat during the flight.
Upon reboarding, it became clear that the business class seat had been given to another passenger who appeared to have not paid for the upgrade. The family was never offered compensation, clarification, or an apology.
In a situation requiring sensitivity and care, United’s staff delivered the opposite. For a family already dealing with the weight of terminal illness, the airline’s lack of basic empathy has left a lasting mark.
