A 32 year old man from Bhagalpur in Bihar was arrested at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata for allegedly molesting a female co passenger. The incident occurred during a flight arriving from Hanoi, Vietnam, following a formal complaint by the woman.
The accused, identified as Abdur Rahim, was detained immediately after the flight landed. Airport officials stated that the alleged incident took place mid flight while the two passengers were seated next to each other.
The woman was seated in 26A, while Rahim occupied seat 26B. She told authorities that he touched her inappropriately multiple times. What first seemed accidental reportedly happened three to four times, making the intent clear.
The victim also accused Rahim of making inappropriate remarks during the journey. After being informed, the cabin crew responded quickly and shifted Rahim to another seat to prevent further interaction and ensure the woman’s safety.
The matter was reported to security agencies before landing. Upon arrival in Kolkata, personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force took Rahim into custody and handed him over to the airport police station.
Police registered a case under relevant sections related to molestation and verbal harassment. Rahim was later produced before a Barasat court, and further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Such incidents cause severe distress to victims and damage the image of passengers on international routes. Authorities have reiterated that inappropriate behaviour during flights will attract strict legal action and zero tolerance.
