
The number of people renouncing their citizenship has only increased in subsequent years with the number being 1,22,000 in 2011 to 2,25,000 in 2022. The Minister of State for External Affairs, V. Muraleedharan provided the information in a written answer to a question asked in Rajya Sabha. He claimed that the people who renounced their citizenship all had their personal reasons for it.
The highest number of passport surrenders were made in Delhi(60,414) followed by Punjab (28,117) and Gujarat(22,300). Goa, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were other states where this number was very high. A total of 24,700 passports were also surrendered in Indian missions abroad between 2019-2022 and this number has also seen a steep upward trend. The USA, Canada, UK, Italy, Australia are the top destinations where Indians have renounced their citizenship.
