A downtown Cleveland nightclub shooting injured nine individuals early Sunday morning. Authorities reported no fatalities, thankfully. Before 2:30 am, Warehouse District clubs closed. Preliminary reports indicate that an unidentified person shot a gathering of people and escaped.
According to Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond, seven men and two women ages 23–38 were shot. Only one man was seriously injured. The victims were rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center by the district’s weekly detail officers. To find a suspect, authorities are scrutinizing security footage from nearby cameras.
No club conflict preceded the shooting, according to authorities. No one has been arrested, and the police are asking for witnesses. Mayor Justin Bibb called it a “tragic and sad day,” spotlighting gun violence in Cleveland and nationwide. Mayor Bibb asked state and federal lawmakers for more tools to combat gun violence. He urged lawmakers to help stop gun violence.
Chief Drummond said the shooter targeted the crowd despite the considerable police presence in the district every Saturday. He stressed the importance of economic development, prevention, intervention, and addressing the root causes of such tragedies. Drummond said adding officers would not have stopped the incident.
