B2 to H1B Nightmare: Techie’s Job Offer Cancelled

Even after getting a job offer and following every rule, one H-1B aspirant found themselves stranded— jobless, and asked to repay a relocation benefit they never even received.

A techie recently shared a troubling experience with a mid-tier US company. After clearly disclosing a B2 visa status and working closely with the company’s immigration team to switch back to H1B, they were assured the company supports this transition.

For the change of status, they had to return to their home country for consular processing. Confident in the deal, they accepted the offer and even turned down other top-tier interviews.

But just a week later, after complete silence from HR, the company abruptly rescinded the offer giving vague reasons as “business needs.”

What’s worse is that the offer letter also promised a one-time untaxed relocation benefit that never came. Instead, the company now wants the candidate to pay back relocation expenses for a job that never began.

Now the person is stuck in the US on a B2 visa, looking for legal advice and debating whether to go public or escalate the matter internally.

It is a horrific story for other H-1B aspirants as well. In the current US immigration climate, it seems one can’t rest assured even when they have written offers and HR promises.
