Can 5M Indian Americans Swing US Elections?

With more than 5 million eligible voters, Indian-Americans can be the deciding factor in this year’s closely fought US elections. As the D-day approaches, let’s look at the key issues relevant to the community.

During one-on-one interviews with the media, people strongly believe that the hate against Indians has increased because of Trump. They spoke against Trump’s vilification of the immigrants and his racist remarks during his speeches.

On the other hand, older Indian businessmen are not happy with the Democratic governance in the last four years and believe that Trump can bring the economic change they need. But at the same time, one of them admitted that his children are voting for Kamala Harris, showing the difference across generations.

However, for some, it is an emotional decision as well. The prospect of an Indian woman sitting at the White House is an inspiration for other women and young girls in the community.

While recent surveys suggest a slight increase in Indian Americans supporting Donald Trump, the major portion of the community is still behind the Democratic Party.

Representation, progressive values, women’s rights, and a sense of belonging– all these are pushing the Indian diaspora to vote blue on November 5.
