It seems even green card holders are not assured of smooth re-entry into the US. A recent social media post by a GC holder has sparked panic as he had an odd interaction at the airport.
The man claims he has lived legally in the US for years, held multiple visas, and finally got a green card through the employment route. But despite having a clean record and all the documents, he was suddenly pulled into secondary inspection by CBP (Customs and Border Protection) after a trip abroad.
The officer gave him no clear reason, just said it was “something I couldn’t waive off.” Minutes later, in the secondary inspection, he was let go by a different officer with a mysterious comment, “It’s probably because you were a student”
Netizens jumped in to share similar stories, many linking the issue to old student visa records. In some cases, it was because the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record hadn’t been properly closed.
One person even said a CBP officer had to send an email to get it fixed, but warned the glitch could repeat on future trips.
This could be the system targeting F-1 students and trying to hold them at the airport for strict questioning. However, with no clear answers yet, the people being held remain in panic and fear till they are let go.
