Tesla, the electric car giant led by Elon Musk, has sued a company called Tesla Power based in Gurugram, India, claiming copyright infringement due to its similar name.
Tesla alleges that Tesla Power is unlawfully using its trademarked name to promote its products.
Tesla, registered in Delaware, accuses Tesla Power of employing trade names like “Tesla Power” and “Tesla Power USA”.
Tesla is seeking damages and a permanent order to stop using their name.
Tesla informed the court that it first noticed Tesla Power’s use of its brand name in 2022. Tesla asked Tesla Power to stop using their name, but Tesla Power continued to advertise under the ‘Tesla Power’ brand. So now Tesla is taking legal action against Tesla Power.
In response, Tesla Power India Pvt Ltd asserts that its primary focus is on producing lead-acid batteries and denies any intent to manufacture electric vehicles.
A representative of Tesla Power clarified that their presence in India predates Elon Musk’s Tesla and emphasized that they never claimed any affiliation with Musk’s company.
The court granted Tesla Power three weeks to provide written responses after it submitted supporting documents for its defense.
The next hearing for the Tesla India trademark case is scheduled for May 22.
