F-1 Chaos: College’s Error Gets SEVIS Terminated

A student about to graduate from a US university suddenly got his F-1 visa status terminated, just because of an administrative mistake.

Taking to social media, an international student from Trine University shared his experience. After losing his uncle, he missed his classes due to emotional distress.

While he was told to retake it in the summer, the university failed to update his Form I-20. As a result, the government thought he finished his program and terminated his SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record.

He had to cancel his OPT (Optional Practical Training) application and apply for reinstatement— a long and uncertain process with USCIS.

Thousands of students face this nightmare due to strict, unforgiving immigration rules. The emotional stress and career uncertainty take a massive toll on these students who should only be worried about their college assignments and exams.

USCIS reinstatement requires paperwork, patience, and often legal help, and many F-1 visa holders aren’t prepared for this fight.

Your best bet is to act fast, talk to your DSO, gather documents, and get legal advice. It is a cruel system trapping students in endless red tape, but sadly that’s the price for the American dream.
