F-1’s Tragic Dilemma: Family Emergency or OPT?

A young international student in the US was recently met with a tragedy, losing his grandfather, the man who raised him. However, he’s too scared to go home because a simple trip could cost him his future.

The F-1 student application for OPT (Optional Practical Training) work permit is still pending. He applied in April, finished his degree in May, and has a job waiting that’s even willing to sponsor his green card.

But without that EAD (Employment Authorization Document) he can’t work. Worse, if he leaves now and the OPT suddenly gets approved or denied, he fears that he will be left stranded.

This is the harsh reality many international students face today. On paper, you’re allowed to travel while OPT is pending but one slip, like a missing signature, a denial while you’re away, or just a tough border agent and you are detained.

In this student’s case, he fears his I-20 wasn’t signed correctly, which could tank his application.

Moreover, under the current political climate, border checks have become aggressive. Students are being grilled over minor paperwork issues and officers aren’t showing much sympathy even in personal tragedies like this one.

OPT was meant to be a bridge to opportunity but it has become a legal trap, turning even a funeral into a decision that could end a dream.
