ICE Approves, University Denies F1 CPT Amazon Offer?

A student on an F-1 visa secured an internship with Amazon, but the opportunity soon turned into a compliance challenge. What looked like a career breakthrough reportedly became a frustrating paperwork issue.

The company is said to have provided a standard CPT support letter with internship details. However, it reportedly declined to sign the university’s custom training agreement forms, stating that it only issues a general letter confirming the academic nature of the role.

The student referred to guidance from ICE, which reportedly states that CPT may require either a cooperative agreement or an employer letter. On paper, the process appeared simple.

However, the university reportedly disagreed and insisted that its own signed learning contract was mandatory. According to the student, the institution said this policy is standard practice and not unique to that campus.

As a result, the internship now appears to be at risk. If the company does not sign the required forms, the student may need to move to an independent study option to remain compliant.

That alternative could create fresh complications. Taking an independent study route may affect graduation timelines and could also impact eligibility for full-time CPT later.

Situations like this often leave students confused and frustrated. Federal guidance may suggest one process, while universities apply separate internal rules.

The result is that students must navigate both systems while important career opportunities remain uncertain. What should have been a major internship win has instead become a stressful compliance struggle.
