School Blunders Student’s F1 Status After Accident

One school error and a missed approval have cost an F1 visa student their legal status in the United States—despite the student doing everything right. In October last year, the student, who was halfway through their master’s program, met with a serious motor accident and was hospitalized. As per US immigration rules, students in such situations can apply for a reduced course load (RCL) based on medical reasons to legally maintain their F1 visa status.

The student followed the process by submitting all the required documentation, including discharge papers and medical letters, to the Designated School Officer (DSO). During the winter term, the school approved the RCL without any issues. But in the following spring term, things took a turn. The student once again provided a fresh medical letter—this time from a licensed psychologist—as specifically requested by the school.

They uploaded the documents on time and followed every instruction. However, the DSO failed to take action. The request was never rejected, but was simply left pending in the system, unnoticed and unresolved. As a result, the student has now fallen out of status.

With the F1 visa expired, the student cannot even exit the country to fix the situation through consular processing. The remaining options are limited and stressful. One is to file for reinstatement, which can cost $550 and take up to eight months. The other is to reapply as a new student—a move that could cost them their Optional Practical Training (OPT) eligibility.

This incident underscores how vulnerable international students can be to institutional oversight. In this case, despite acting responsibly while recovering from a traumatic event, the student’s future now hangs in limbo due to a seemingly minor internal slip-up.
