An Indian F-1 student has been stuck in a long visa delay after losing his passport, causing him to miss an entire semester in the US. One mistake turned into a chain of setbacks that he could not control.
Passport Lost and Forced Return
The student misplaced his passport while enrolled in an undergraduate program in the US. He had to return to India on an Emergency Certificate hoping to get back in time for his studies.
New Passport but Visa Problems
He received a new Indian passport by the end of May. However, his F-1 visa stamping was sent into 221(g) administrative processing at the New Delhi consulate.
Weeks of Waiting
He alleges that his passport remained with the embassy. With no progress, he ended up missing the entire Fall 2025 semester.
SEVIS Termination Issue
Since he could not return, his university terminated his SEVIS record. They issued a new I-20 with a new SEVIS ID for Spring 2026.
Old Visa Becomes Invalid
Because each F-1 visa is linked to one SEVIS ID, his earlier application became invalid. He had to withdraw the old case and request his passport back.
A Fresh Start Required
A new fee was paid by his travel agent, but no appointment dates appeared. He has not filed the new DS-160 yet as he is unsure of the process.
Time Running Out
Spring 2026 is his final semester. He must be in the US by mid-January and cannot afford another delay.
A Frustrating Situation
He is worried about whether the old withdrawn case is blocking him. It is disheartening to see a student face so many hurdles just to continue studying at a university he is already enrolled in.
