An international student on an F-1 visa faced a shocking situation at a US airport when border officers told them their visa had been revoked. The student, who had recently traveled abroad for family reasons, was unaware of the termination notice.
Visa Termination and SEVIS Reactivation
Earlier this year, the student was notified that both their F-1 visa and SEVIS record had been terminated. However, their SEVIS ID was later reactivated automatically, giving them the impression that their F-1 status was also valid.
Trouble at the US Airport
When they returned to the US, border officers informed them that their F-1 visa was never reinstated, even though their SEVIS was active. The student now has no choice but to apply for a new visa, a process known for its long delays and frequent rejections.
SEVIS and F-1 Visa Are Different
SEVIS and the physical F-1 visa stamp serve different functions. SEVIS records your active student status within the US, while the F-1 visa is a travel document. You can stay in the country legally with an active SEVIS, but once the visa is revoked, you can’t re-enter.
Student Faces Fresh Visa Process
This student’s case shows how confusing visa systems can be. Despite being legally present through SEVIS, they are now forced to restart the entire visa process due to a termination that was never clearly resolved.
