F1 students at the University of Florida are facing fresh travel confusion after receiving an email that warns you to avoid international travel unless necessary. The message targets students who will cross the four year mark on their F 1 visa by the time they return.
Travel Advisory Sparks Panic
The issue escalated when a fifth year PhD student shared the advisory on Reddit, asking if they should cancel their travel plans despite holding a valid F 1 visa and I 20 till August 2026. Other students nearing graduation and those on extensions say they received the same warning.
DHS Proposal Behind the Chaos
This wave of concern comes from a Department of Homeland Security proposal that plans to end the current Duration of Status rule. The plan replaces it with fixed four year visa limits, forcing many students to renew their F 1 visas in the middle of their programme.
Rule Still Uncertain
The proposal is not final, and there is no timeline for when it will take effect. The worry stems from past policy shifts announced without warning, and students now expect a similar sudden rollout from the administration.
Students Left on Edge
Immigration lawyers and universities are challenging the proposed rule because it endangers thousands of international students. The advisory is a cautionary signal for anyone planning year end travel, leaving many unsure of how to proceed.
