Gokul Sridhar, who lives in Germany, took to X to criticize a fellow Indian family for disturbing the peace of an ultra-quiet train to Helsinki. According to him, the family kept their cabin doors open while speaking loudly in Hindi on a video call.
His post quickly got much attention and reignited the debate on Indians’ behavior in public spaces. Gokul himself felt ashamed being an Indian as he questioned, “ We really don’t get a civic sense, do we?”
Fellow Indians also chimed in with their opinions and similar experiences from the UK. They called out Indian travelers’ public misbehavior from ignoring basic social norms to being inconsiderate of others’ private space.
These repeated instances continue to fuel the stereotype, leaving many Indians abroad frustrated and embarrassed. People should be more considerate of their surroundings if they want the perception of the community to change.
