F-1 Terminated, Green Card Denied Over 1 Page

A green card applicant faced a shocking setback when a missing page in her paperwork led to a complete rejection of her application.

F-1 status terminated

The applicant, a former F-1 visa holder, and her husband had requested her school to terminate her student visa, expecting the green card process to proceed without issues. But after her F-1 was cancelled, they received a rejection email for the I-485 Adjustment of Status.

Legal status lost overnight

This error meant that her terminated F-1 status came before any USCIS decision. As a result, she was suddenly considered to be staying in the United States illegally. The mistake put the couple’s immigration plans in serious jeopardy, prompting them to seek legal advice immediately.

Relief through marriage to U.S. citizen

The only relief in this case was that her husband is a U.S. citizen. Because they are married, any overstay is forgiven while the spouse applies for a green card. She can legally remain in the country, though she cannot leave until her status is fixed.

Highlighting risks of paperwork errors

The situation shows how even a small filing mistake can cause life-changing consequences. Without her marriage to a U.S. citizen, the applicant’s future in America could have been completely destroyed. Experts warn that without better safeguards against filing errors, more applicants may face the same risks.
