Indian H1B workers are in a state of panic. The uncertainty of visa renewals, the endless wait for green cards, and the fear of deportation are enough to distill fear throughout the community.
An American employee, while comparing Chinese and Indian co-workers, claims that while Chinese nationals were more chill, many Indians seemed unwilling to return home. Desperate measures like green card marriages and questionable asylum claims are whispered about, painting a picture of extreme desperation to stay in America.
But is this the complete story? The narrative that Indians are the only community that is fearful seems like a gross simplification of events.
India’s challenges are undeniable as many Indians daily complain about corruption, discrimination, and poor infrastructure in the country. However, claiming that all Indians dread returning home just because of these reasons is incorrect.
Moreover, the notion that Indians are trying to scam the system while others follow the rules is a harmful narrative that can propagate racism against the community.
The real question should be why the US immigration system is putting so many livelihoods at risk. Why do even legal immigrants are living in panic over the recent curbs?
But these questions could be difficult to answer for Americans who fail to reflect and question their government. Nonetheless, propagating such views, and discussing other country’s poor states is not the right approach.
