H-1B Crackdown: US Demands Full Social Media Access

In another blow to H-1B visas, the Trump administration announced a new rule that allows officers to check your social media accounts while reviewing your online presence. The requirement applies to both H-1B and H-4 applicants and adds new worry to an already difficult process.

New Rule for Social Media Access
From December 15, the US Department of State instructs every H-1B and H-4 applicant to keep their social media accounts public for review. Earlier this year, the same rule applied to F-1 visa applicants, showing a clear rise in digital-level scrutiny. Many fear that one old meme or political post against Trump can now block a visa.

Concerns Rise Among Indian Applicants
Thousands of Indians waiting for stamping feel this rule is another unpredictable hurdle. While the DOS calls it a step for national security, visa seekers worry about privacy and judgment based on past online activity. Fear replaces confidence as the process grows more intrusive.

Platforms Under Review
Steven Brown, a Houston-based immigration attorney, shared the list of platforms from the 2020 DS-160 form. It includes Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and even outdated sites. He joked that applicants might need to revive MySpace accounts or post pro-administration content to feel safe.

Mixed Signals From the Administration
The rule has triggered backlash from Indian applicants and immigration experts. It also stands in contrast to Trump’s recent claim that the US needs skilled foreign workers for defence and technology. Despite that, the government placed a fee of $100,000 on each H-1B petition and added social media monitoring shortly after.

Unclear Execution and Growing Anxiety
There is no clarity on how these checks will happen. Applicants with appointments after December 15 want answers. The community voices strong privacy concerns, but the administration continues with the rule while everyone waits for more information.
