H1B Sponsorship Fraud: OPT Worker Used and Thrown

As if immigrants already didn’t have enough on their plates, people are reporting that employers are backing out of a promised H-1B sponsorship at the last moment, leaving OPT workers in panic.

A young data analyst shared that he joined a dental-implant company in Salt Lake City with a clear verbal assurance: they’d file his H-1B. He followed up for months, asking politely, but only received delays over vague excuses and slowly growing silence.

Then, one day before the lottery deadline, they dropped the bombshell: the company had backed out. And to rub salt on wounds, he was let go the very next morning, used and thrown like trash.

Now, on STEM OPT, a work permit for graduate students, he has a 90-day ticking clock on his unemployment. He’s desperately job-hunting, reaching out, asking for referrals, and trying to find a company that can sponsor him before his time runs out.

Sadly, this story isn’t rare. Many Indian students on OPT are facing the same betrayal—promises of sponsorship, then silence or withdrawal at the last moment.

This is blatant exploitation of young talent and their skills. Companies milk them for a year only to discard them when the paperwork becomes inconvenient.

With the US government hell bent on its crackdown against immigrants, there is no official help to take action against these fraudulent employers either. Instead, the authorities are busy flagging and terminating innocent university students and workers.
