A 32 year old NRI has shared his experience after returning to Hyderabad following H-1B visa issues. His nine year stay in the US ended after he lost his job. Although the decision was planned, he now feels uncertain about it.
The tech professional revealed on Reddit that he was working on an H-1B visa when he was laid off. Due to visa rules, he had limited time to find another employer. With no immediate option, he had to leave the US.
He admitted that life in the US was not always perfect. There were moments of loneliness and emotional distance. However, he also appreciated the independence and quality of life he experienced there.
For the past five months, he has been living with his parents in Hyderabad. While he values the time spent with family, he feels as if he has moved backward in life. Issues such as traffic and pollution have also been difficult to adjust to.
The emotional impact has grown stronger as some of his friends relocate to the US through company transfers. His recent breakup has added to the feeling of being left behind. Watching others pursue opportunities abroad has intensified his regret.
He still has some unused time under his original six year H-1B limit. However, his I-140 remains unapproved, which complicates his chances of returning. The current visa climate and ongoing tech layoffs add to his uncertainty.
Several NRIs responded to his post, saying reverse migration can be challenging. Many shared that the adjustment period often takes a year or more. Over time, some eventually find stability and acceptance.
The techie has started working in India and hopes for an overseas opportunity in the future. For now, he feels caught between two countries and two possible futures.
