H-1B Crisis: Pregnant Wife Stuck, No Emergency Slots?

An H-1B visa holder is facing a difficult situation after his pregnant wife was stranded in India due to the lack of interview slots. She had travelled to India in December and later discovered she was two months pregnant.

The woman had earlier suffered a miscarriage in May 2025. Because of this medical history, her current pregnancy is considered high risk. The delay in returning to the United States has increased the family’s concern.

The shortage of H-visa renewal interview slots has affected thousands of people across India. Many visa holders have remained stuck for months, unable to travel back to the United States due to appointment delays.

The US Embassy has not released new booking slots since December 2025. Applying for an emergency appointment also requires a previously booked regular interview slot, which has made the process more difficult.

Experts have advised the H-1B holder to contact a local Congress representative for help. Representatives can sometimes assist in requesting emergency appointments in urgent medical situations.

Approaching a Congress representative for such support is allowed. Tax paying residents, including non citizens, can seek assistance when facing genuine difficulties related to visa processing.

However, embassies do not always treat pregnancy as a medical emergency. Consular officers usually require proof of immediate life threatening risk before approving emergency interview requests.

The woman is advised to submit complete medical records while requesting an emergency appointment. Providing details of the previous miscarriage may improve the chances of getting an emergency slot.
