A visa trip to India has stranded thousands of H-1B workers due to the mass rescheduling of renewal appointments in US consulates. While it is a cause of panic for many, one techie found some solace after putting in years of hard work in America.
The H-1B techie is currently stuck in India and shared his experience while waiting for a visa stamping appointment. The person said the uncertainty pushed them to do something unusual and calculate exactly how long their savings could last if they were unable to return to their US career.
According to his online post, the worker has about $120,000 in savings. His rent in the US is $1,950 per month, while his estimated lifestyle cost in Bengaluru is about ₹1 lakh per month.
The tech worker was surprisingly reassured when he calculated that he could survive about three months while paying expenses in both countries. And after that, when the US lease runs out, he claims his remaining money could stretch for nearly nine years in India, even if he earns nothing during that time.
Seeing those numbers, the Indian techie said the situation suddenly felt far less catastrophic. He felt that 7 years of hard work in the US and drastic changes in the cost of living in India had provided him with some security.
Delays in visa stamping appointments due to the new social media screening have sparked growing anxiety around layoffs in the US tech sector. Several H-1B employees are worried about traveling outside the country for visa renewal.
That is why the worker’s reassuring story struck a chord online. Sometimes the fear around visas and layoffs feels bigger than the actual financial reality.
