H-1B Travel Panic: India-US Air Fares Skyrocket

The sudden announcement of Trump’s $100,000 fee on H-1B visas has immediately disrupted India-US air travel. Ticket prices have spiked drastically as many travellers rushed to book flights in panic, and airlines quickly raised fares in response to the sudden demand.

An Indian traveller observed that tickets to the US, once around ₹50,000, are now crossing ₹1,00,000. Even major routes are affected, with the New Delhi to New York flight jumping from ₹37,000 to ₹80,000, leaving passengers stunned by the sharp increase.

Chaos at airports amid festival rush

Reports surfaced of Indian passengers at SFO airport deplaning after Trump’s announcement while returning home for Durga Puja. The timing has deeply impacted festive-season travel, making it extremely difficult for Indians planning family visits during the holidays.

Companies issue warnings to workers

Realising the potential risks, several companies have advised Indian H-1B visa holders to avoid unnecessary travel. Those already outside the US have been urged to return immediately to prevent complications caused by the new policy changes.

Backlash from the community

The controversial move has already drawn criticism from immigration attorneys, international workers, and students awaiting work visas. With around 1.2 million Indians on H-1B, the sudden policy shift has created widespread anxiety and uncertainty across the Indian diaspora.
