In a step towards social progression and abolition of age-old practices, a school in Kansas changed its hair policy after an 8-year-old Native American boy was forced to cut his hair in accordance with the school’s dress code.
A formal complaint was made by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of the student to the Girard Unified School District (USD) Board of Education, which voted to remove the hair policy required for boys.
Earlier, the native American boy was made to cut his hair even after his mother had requested to let him keep his long hair as so many religious sentiments are involved. But, the school’s assistant principal said that the boy had to cut his hair or he would be sent home.
On one hand, this incident paved the way towards social equality for the native americans. But, on the other hand, it highlighted the issue that even in the 21st century, there is still discrimination against native Americans, the original Americans, who have lived there for millennia.
