Taral Patel, a 30-year-old of Indian origin, running for Fort Bend County commissioner, was arrested on Wednesday. He faces charges of online impersonation and misrepresentation, according to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office.
According to the district attorney’s office, Patel is accused of a serious crime called online impersonation, which is a third-degree felony, and misrepresentation of identity, which is a Class A misdemeanor.
Patel is currently in Fort Bend County Jail, with bail set at $20,000 for the felony charge and $2,500 for the misdemeanor charge.
The district attorney’s office couldn’t give more details about the arrest due to rules about talking about cases before they go to trial.
Earlier in September, Patel said some mean things about him were put on Facebook. The comments called him names like a terrorist and a communist and said bad things about his religion, Hinduism.
The credibility of these comments was questioned by a spokesperson Andy Meyers, citing difficulties in verifying the identities of the commenters.
