An Indian national has pleaded guilty to the accusations of running a human smuggling operation across the US-Canada border. Shivam, 22 years old, was arrested a year ago and will now be sentenced amid a rising immigration crackdown in America.
According to the US Department of Justice, he coordinated drivers between October 2024 and June 2025 to pick up illegal migrants after they crossed the US-Canada border. Administration claimed the migrants were then taken to stash houses in Northern New York and hotels in Plattsburgh.
Court documents alleged Shivam paid drivers for every migrant transported and personally handled logistics for the smuggling routes.
On January 26, 2025, the US Border Patrol chased down two vehicles traveling near the border. One vehicle crashed off the road while the second was stopped later in Mooers, New York.
Officials claimed 12 illegal migrants from India and the UK were found inside the vehicles. Further investigation revealed that Shivam instructed a co-conspirator to move the group across the border and agreed to pay $100 per migrant smuggled.
On May 14, after more than a year, Shivam pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit alien smuggling and three counts of alien smuggling for financial gain. Scheduled to be sentenced on September 4, he could now face a minimum of five years in prison and could receive up to 15 years.
