Fake ID, $116K Scam: 2 Indian Men Arrested in US

Two Indian-origin men have been arrested for allegedly running a $116,000 scam across multiple states in the United States. The case has drawn attention due to its scale and organised execution over a short period.

Mihir Patel and Himanshubhai Barot are facing serious charges in Georgia. Authorities allege that the duo operated a phone scam by posing as law enforcement officials and targeting victims across the country.

Victims were reportedly told that their legal and financial interests were at risk. This created urgency and fear, forcing them to act quickly. As a result, several individuals sent large amounts of cash to avoid supposed consequences.

The scam is said to have taken place between March 1 and March 15, 2021. At least seven victims from different states mailed cash ranging between $10,000 and $30,000. This highlights the wide reach of the operation.

Investigators traced the movement of money across several states. Cash packages were sent from places like Oregon, Nevada, Maryland, New York, California, and Minnesota. These were eventually routed into smaller cities in Georgia.

Interestingly, the packages were addressed to a name different from the accused. The name “David Williams” was reportedly used as an alias in the operation. This added another layer of concealment to the scheme.

Prosecutors claim that Mihir used fake identification under this alias to collect the money. After receiving the packages, the duo allegedly documented the contents through photos and videos. These were then shared with other individuals involved.

Authorities have also added further charges in the case. It is alleged that Himanshubhai Barot was in the United States illegally during the time of the scam. Both men now face charges related to conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

The incident has triggered strong reactions within the Indian community. Many have expressed concern over the negative image such cases create. With rising scrutiny, such actions can impact the perception of the wider community.
