Indian Woman, 21 Becomes British High Commissioner

In a delightful turn of events, Shreya Dharmarajan, a 21-year-old from Chennai, assumed the role of the British High Commissioner to India for a full day. This extraordinary opportunity granted her a unique glimpse into the world of diplomacy and the dynamic partnership between the UK and India.

This initiative, known as ‘High Commissioner for a Day,’ is an annual competition organized by the British High Commission in New Delhi to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11. It’s a testament to the UK’s commitment to empowering girls and nurturing them as future leaders and changemakers.

Shreya, a passionate advocate for education and child psychology, was selected as this year’s winner from a pool of over 180 talented young women across the country. Her journey to Delhi was made possible through the generous contributions of Vistara Airlines and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.

During her day as High Commissioner, Shreya engaged in a range of activities that shed light on critical global issues. She led discussions on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals at the United Nations office in New Delhi, interacted with environmental innovators striving to address global challenges, and had meaningful conversations with the accomplished women leaders of the ‘Chevening SheLeads program.’

One of the highlights of Shreya’s day was a meeting with Professor Ajay Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. They explored ways to enhance research collaboration between the UK and India, a testament to the shared commitment of the two nations to progress and innovation.

In a nod to sustainability and clean energy, Shreya launched a report on electric vehicle charging infrastructure in partnership with the Delhi Transport Department as part of the Accelerating Smart Power and Renewable Energy in India (ASPIRE) program.

Shreya’s experience as High Commissioner for a Day left her enriched, enlightened, and motivated. She returned with a profound understanding of gender equality, holistic education, and the broad scope of the Sustainable Development Goals.
