An Indian woman Avlani Jimisha, reportedly middle-aged and visiting the McHenry County in the state of Illinois, found herself in serious legal trouble after she was caught attempting to steal merchandise worth $1,300 from a Target store.
According to reports, Target staff noticed suspicious activity as she had been shopping for over seven hours and promptly called the police. Within minutes, one female officer and two male officers arrived at the scene and conducted a thorough investigation that lasted more than four hours.
Throughout the ordeal, the woman repeatedly pleaded with the officers — insisting she had money and was ready to pay for the items.
She reportedly begged them hundreds of times to let her go, describing the incident as deeply embarrassing. But the officers, particularly the female cop, remained unmoved. At one point, the officer sternly asked her, “Do you steal like this in your country?”
Despite her emotional pleas and willingness to pay on the spot, the woman was arrested and taken to the police station, where formal charges were filed against her.
This incident serves as a harsh reminder, especially for Indian students and visitors in the U.S.: shoplifting is treated as a serious offense with long-lasting consequences. Once caught, no apology or last-minute offer to pay can undo the damage.
It’s not just a legal issue — it’s a lifetime of shame. Ask yourself: is it worth it?
